Elevating Custom Cabs
Nexise Manufacturing reinvents the art of craftsmanship through the passionate pursuit of architectural innovation
Design. Innovate. Build. Those are the drivers behind Nexise Manufacturing (Nexise), a Brooklyn-based full-service family-owned manufacturing company founded in 2019 by President and Owner Daniel Karran. Offering custom artisan fabrication and short lead times, this state-of-the-art design-build manufacturing house has made a name for itself throughout the New York metro area.
With its impeccable reputation for superior customer service and quality craftsmanship, Nexise takes great pride in offering the most innovative and cost-effective products and services. The one-stop shop specializes in design, modernization, installation and construction of elevator cabs, entrances and doors, repair and restoration, and architectural metal work.
Karran shares, “We’re a full-service manufacturing company. Our main bread and butter is elevator cab interiors. We manufacture panels, the actual elevator shells, using a variety of products, whether it’s glass, metal or wood. We tend to focus more on the high-end projects and large volume projects, including architectural metal work.”
The Ride to the Top
Karran is no stranger to this specialized line of work. He explains, “My father has been in this industry for 40 years. I basically grew up with it my entire life. In 2019, I wanted to start on my own, so I went out and established Nexise, and we built it from the ground up.”
He adds, “I started with four employees and a bucket of paint. Now we employ close to 35 people. At the beginning, we had a very small shop in Brooklyn that was barely 4,000 square feet. Today, we occupy a 20,000-square-foot facility (also in Brooklyn). The new facility has its own metal machinery, a full-service wood shop and a full-service refinishing shop where we do custom painting and refinishing of all materials.”
As for how Karran and his dedicated team deal with their customers, he remarks, “The one thing that truly sets us apart from everybody in the industry is our communication skills. Our customers are kept up to date, whether we’re going to be behind schedule or we’re ahead of schedule. Whatever the case may be with their project, we keep in touch with them. And, I’m personally very hands-on with every project. I’m always in the background keeping check, overseeing production and installation.”
Projects of Pride
Two projects that Karran is particularly proud of helped elevate Manhattan properties with custom work and innovative solutions. For 66 West 38th Street, a mixed-use building in midtown, Nexise performed the high-end cab project with custom work done by hand. Karran says, “This was a unique design for an elevator. From the floor and ceiling to the wall panels, there’s custom bronze radiant panels, all of which was rolled in our shop and has intricate inlays. That was all put together by hand using porcelain sourced from Italy with a very specific layout. The floor tiles, which also came over from Italy, were cut by guys here in our shop.”
Another large project in midtown, on the east side, was 630 3rd Avenue, a 23-floor, 252,000-sq. ft. commercial office building located between East 40th and East 41st. “We had the task of repurposing the wire mesh that was installed originally on the back wall,” says Karran, “and there we had to bring everything back to the shop and apply a custom oxidized finish to turn it into a different color. We then manufactured a brand-new cab and shell, plus we made custom glass panels that are interwoven with a mesh-like fabric.”
Family and Community
Beyond its attention to detail and customer-based work ethic, Nexise is also proud to support the local community. During the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, the team made lunch deliveries to first responders and hospital front line workers, and also donated masks to three different New York area hospitals.
Whether its custom fabrication or caring for the community, Karran is quick to emphasize that this is a family business at its core. He says, “Although I own it, my father is here, my mom, my sister, my nephews are involved. Everybody plays a strong part. And, my staff has been with me since day one. We’ve grown over the years and we will continue to grow. It’s a great company to work for.”
